Q: How can I dance in the impermanence of life?
A: First, simply let the dance of life unfold in you; after a while, you may see how the very play of life’s transience reveals the secret of Ultimate Stability…
Shiva Nataraja Dancing in Your Heart
The real dance is not that of fluctuating emotions and erratic thoughts, but the vibrating ground out of which all such inconstancies, the realm of opposite dualities like pleasure and suffering, arise and in which they are embraced.
Shiva Nataraja, Consciousness dancing with itself, in your heart, is the Real Dancer.
The beauty of dance lies not just in the movement, but in the magical openness in which the body, sensations, and mind take place in a wider sense of yourself, a sense of totality… Similarly, in the journey of a conscious soul, what you took yourself to be is seen as only a floating expression of what you really are. It is a breakthrough to real Presence, the wide-open Heart, which is the cause of time and space. This is the true dance of life.
Grace in Extremes
The essence of dance is grace, which is an embrace of extremes. A graceful dancer is one who knows the art of balance… Grace means finding plentiful harmony where previously there was only effort and strain. It is a radiating, conscious power that charges any excessive tendency with the beauty of centeredness, of the Heart…
To dance with the Earth, the sky becomes rain. Such joyful celebration and grace make life emerge. Taoism teaches that extremes create their opposites. It’s not about avoiding edges but bringing them into the light of the Center.
Find the balance of the Center, and you will live in harmony! Living this way is the dance.
Devotion to Heart-Awareness
A professional dancer can easily learn new dance styles because a flow and ease of body and mind have somehow become their second nature. In the same way, the constant awareness of the Heart gives you the natural sense of balance, joy, and grace in the dance of life.
The Dancing Center
Dance shows a dynamic equilibrium. It unfolds a flow-balance, not a static point. The movement from one balance point to another, from center to center, becomes itself a flowing Dancing Center.
The Ganga-like flow of consciousness is cleaning your soul.
See spanda—the life throb of enthusiasm, a ritualistic dance in the Heart invoking God, the Beloved—and thus surrender to deeper transparency.
All struggle stems from mental disorientation, from lack of grace. When you are Dancing-Awareness, you see, sense, taste, hear only this play of Consciousness.
The Blind Person and the Dancing Cane
Evoke the image of a blind person with a cane. Each step is a constant entering into an unknown space, while the cane swings in a dance between extremes—to the left, to the right, touching possible obstacles. What the person wants to perceive is not the obstacles, but the space between them, the emptiness—which is freedom. Similarly, awareness, swinging between thoughts and boundaries, honors the Center, the Heart…
Such conscious dancing fills the gap between samsara and nirvana; it happens there, at the edges…bringing sacredness to all we dance with…
When was the last time you danced like this?
“As the wind loves to call things to dance,
May your gravity be lightened by grace.
As time remains free of all that it frames,
May your mind stay clear of all it names.
May your prayer of listening deepen enough
To hear in the depths the laughter of God.”
