Visit Us In Mazunte

Hridaya Mexico is located in the charming little beach town of Mazunte, on the Pacific coast of the state of Oaxaca. Mazunte is 10 minutes from Zipolite, 25 minutes from Puerto Angel, 30 minutes from Pochutla, and approximately 1 hour from both Puerto Escondido and Huatulco. Bus travel to Oaxaca City takes about 3.5 hours, to Acapulco, 10 hours, and to Mexico City (TAPO Bus Station), 16 hours.

Important Note:

There will be construction work on the road between Pochutla and Huatulco for the next few months, and the road will be restricted at certain times of the day, creating delays. During this period, we strongly recommend that you travel via Puerto Escondido.

Finding Us

When you arrive in Mazunte, walk along the main street with the ocean on your right. You will pass the Turtle Center, and soon after, the road will begin to climb. We are located just before the peak of the hill. If you start going downhill again, you have gone too far.

From Mexico City

From Mexico City, fly to Huatulco (HUX) or Puerto Escondido (PXM). To find the best deal, remember to search domestic airlines like Volaris, Viva AeroBus, and AeroMéxico.

In Mexico City, go to either the Central del Sur Taxqueña or TAPO bus station, and look for the bus company “ADO” (Camiones ADO). Ask for a ticket to Pochutla, Oaxaca (pronunciation: Wahaka). They cost around $1400 MXN, usually depart in the late afternoon or early evening, and take around 16.5 hours to get to Pochutla.

From Huatulco Airport to Hridaya Yoga

There are a few options:

  1. Airport Taxi: You can arrange a taxi at a kiosk in the airport. This is convenient, but it is the most expensive option, costing $2,000 MXN or more.
  2. Private Taxi: Exit the airport and walk about 200 meters to the main road. From here, you can take a private taxi (with good bargaining, around $900-$1000 MXN) directly to our center.
  3. Shared Taxi: Walk to the main road and find a shared taxi to Pochutla (about $45 MXN), and from there take a taxi ($300-400 MXN) or colectivo (shared pickup truck, $30 MXN) to Mazunte/San Agustinillo.

Note that all taxis charge more when you request air conditioning.

From there, you can catch a bus (in the direction of Pochutla or Huatulco) from near the Chedraui supermarket ($50 MXN). A more expensive bus also leaves from the bus station. Ask the driver to drop you off at San Antonio (a crossroads with an OXXO convenience store). From here, you can take a private taxi ($100 MXN) or colectivo ($15 MXN) to Mazunte or San Agustinillo.

Take a Líneas Unidas minibus from their terminal in Oaxaca City ($360 MXN). There are departures to Zipolite every 3-4 hours—the schedule varies, so check in advance (Facebook; +52 951 187 55 11). The journey is approximately 3.5 hours. Ask to be dropped off in Mazunte.

If there isn’t a convenient departure time to Zipolite, there are also minibuses every hour to Pochutla ($300 MXN). You can take a taxi or colectivo to Mazunte from there.

From Pochutla to Hridaya

From Pochutla, you can take a taxi ($300-$400 MXN private or $50 MXN shared) or a colectivo truck ($30 MXN; the ones to Mazunte/San Agustinillo leave from Calle Jamaica). Tell the driver to drop you off at “El Neem” or “el centro de Yoga entre Mazunte y San Agustinillo.”

Taxi Shares

You may be able to find other students to share a taxi to/from Huatulco, Puerto Escondido, or Oaxaca City. Hridaya doesn’t organize taxi shares, but you can visit this page to review current requests or add your own. If you see a request that matches your needs, you can contact the person who listed it directly. Note that costs will depend on the time of day and the number of people you share with.

Welcome to Paradise!

Mazunte is a peaceful haven, offering a refreshing contrast to the bustling resort towns along the Pacific Coast. Its serene atmosphere feels worlds away from the stresses of daily life, making it the perfect destination to disconnect and unwind.

This sense of isolation also means there are no large supermarkets or shopping malls in town. While essentials can be found in nearby Huatulco, Puerto Escondido, or Oaxaca, it’s wise to plan ahead and bring what you need to fully enjoy this slice of paradise without interruptions.

We recommend packing the following:

  • A flashlight
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Sunscreen
  • A water bottle: The school has drinking water available for refills.
  • A thermos: If you enjoy drinking tea during lectures, it is a good idea to bring a thermos, as mugs are not allowed in the halls.
  • A yoga mat: Although the school has mats available for use, it is more hygienic to bring your own.
  • A sarong or towel: If you decide to use one of our mats we ask that you cover it with your own sarong or towel. These are also great to bring to the beach!
  • Electrical adapters: Mexican electricity is supplied at U.S.-standard 110 volts, 60 cycles, and U.S. devices work here without problem. Plugs and sockets are generally two-pronged, non-polar. You must bring adapters if you are going to use appliances with polar two-pronged or three-pronged plugs.
  • A travel alarm clock: If you are doing a silent meditation retreat and don’t want to keep your phone on airplane mode, you may want to bring an alarm clock.
  • A camera: Although film is available, it is desirable to use digital if possible.
  • A computer (optional!): There are Internet cafes in town, with access to scanners, copiers, Skype, and other amenities available at a reasonable cost. (Please note that the use of computers and other electronic devices is not allowed during meditation retreats.)
  • Sunglasses
  • A hat
  • Toiletries/medications: There are small pharmacies in Mazunte, but they don’t stock a large variety of goods. It is best to bring enough toiletries to last the duration of your stay.
  • Shawl (for early morning meditations or to keep bugs away in the evenings)
  • Earplugs (for use when meditating)
  • Clothing: With an average temperature in Mazunte of 85 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius), you will want to bring clothing that is lightweight. Mazunte is very laid back, and most people wear very casual clothes. Loose-fitting, hand-washable, easy-to-dry clothes make for trouble-free Oaxacan Coast vacationing. Tank tops, t-shirts, skirts, shorts, blouses, and pants will be perfect throughout the year in Mazunte.

Please note that there are no reliable ATM machines in Mazunte, so it is best to change money or use cash machines at the airport upon arrival

When to Visit

The Hridaya Center is open year-round and each season has its beauty. There are two sharply defined seasons in Mazunte, the tropical/moist weather of summer and early fall, and the dry weather of winter and spring. In July, August, and September the increase in cloud cover can push the average daily temperatures below those of the very warm late April, May, and early June. The advantage of visiting in the summer/fall is the lush, green landscape. During the winter/spring you will experience the green and brown combination of dry landscape.

Stay On-Site at Hridaya Mexico for an Immersive Experience

As you contemplate embarking on a meditation retreat, yoga module, or workshop at Hridaya Mexico, we warmly invite you to enhance your experience by staying on-site at the Hridaya Center. Staying with us is highly recommended, as our center is thoughtfully designed to bring you closer to the silence and beauty within your heart. It serves as a sanctuary where, alongside your formal practices, the natural joy of simply Being can effortlessly unfold.

Reasons for Staying On-Site

Supporting Silence and Self-Awareness

Our center supports mauna, silence, and Self-awareness. Staying on-site allows you to more easily maintain a state of introspection and quietness, deepening your practice and your inner journey without the potential interruptions of the external world. It allows you to live in peace, supported by the enchanting sounds of nature and the gentle presence of other spiritual seekers.

Residing on school premises ensures that you have a secure and peaceful environment, especially at night, so that you can focus entirely on your spiritual journey without concerns. Here, night brings not cares but the serene contemplation of the stars and ocean from our terrace.

Living steps away from our meditation halls, dining area, and contemplation spaces means everything you need is within reach, so you can participate in early morning or late-night sessions without disturbance. Thus, there is no need for a daily commute, especially during hot afternoons or late at night. It allows you more time and energy to focus on spiritual practice rather than logistics, making your stay more relaxed and enjoyable.

Our center is permeated with the energy of continuous practice and dedication. Living here for the duration of your retreat, module, or workshop allows you to fully immerse yourself in this sacred space.

Therefore, living on-site means the mundane concerns of the external world grow dim, allowing the flame of Awareness to burn brighter within. This closeness promotes a deeper immersion in the teachings and practices. It supports the elevation of consciousness and purification processes. In this way, it becomes easier to be free from old, compulsive habits and addictions. This environment supports an uplifting rhythm of life, where more and more thoughts, actions, interactions, and moments lead back to the Heart.

The simple, intentional design of our accommodations is meant to mirror the clarity and purity of a mind turned inward, the simplicity of Being. This setting is an invitation to sustain and deepen your awareness of the vibrant, eternal Now. The serene and peaceful atmosphere helps you maintain a meditative state throughout your stay.

Hridaya is holistic and multidimensional: along with being a yoga and meditation school for Self-Awareness and the opening of the Heart, it’s a conscious, loving, and compassionate sangha (community). Being surrounded by open-hearted people committed to Self-Inquiry meditation and spiritual transformation is a constant reminder of the power of love and awareness. It’s a metaphor for the interconnected web of life and awakens a powerful, collective energy that uplifts everyone.

We have a variety of accommodation options to suit your needs and preferences, ensuring your stay is comfortable, peaceful, and spiritually conducive. For pricing information, please visit the registration page of the program you are interested in. When booking, select a package that includes the course fee and your choice of accommodations, or choose the “course only” option if you decide to stay off-site.

If you would like more information, please contact us. We look forward to welcoming you to our home in Mazunte.

Off-Site Accommodation Options

If you won’t be staying at the Hridaya Center during your visit, there are numerous accommodation options from which to choose. Our center is located on a hill between the villages of Mazunte and San Agustinillo, so booking accommodation in either location is generally convenient and within walking distance. We recommend asking for a weekly or monthly price, as discounts may be available.

If these options aren’t within your budget, consider arriving early to explore San Agustinillo and Mazunte. Both towns have private rooms, hostels, and campsites (except during the rainy season) with lower prices.

Note that some hotels offer special rates for our students. Be sure to ask for them when booking!

Receiving Mail at Hridaya

Our students sometimes like to receive mail while they are staying with us. As Mazunte does not have mail delivery, Hridaya maintains a post office box in nearby Pochutla. You are welcome to have mail sent in care of our mailing address; however, please be aware that delivery to our post office box is very unreliable, and Hridaya takes no responsibility for its arrival. When mailing letters or packages to this address, students accept the risk of items not arriving and the responsibility for picking them up from the post office. Note that international mail sent to Mexico often takes several weeks to arrive, so please plan accordingly.

Receiving mail from an international air freight company (DHL, FedEx, UPS, etc.) is more reliable. Our Street Address is usually accepted by these companies for delivery directly to the Hridaya Center. Please note that regular mail is not delivered to this address. Embrace the Joy of Acting from the Heart

Participating in the Karma Yoga immersive Retreat offers a profound opportunity to deepen your spiritual practice while fully immersing yourself in the Hridaya Mexico community. You’ll be invited to participate in yoga and meditation sessions, support our internal operations, and engage in our active community life while learning to act from a space of awareness, detachment, and love.

Love and Compassion in Action

Our Community Development Department’s goal of integrating the Hridaya Center with the local Mexican community has rapidly gained momentum. This interconnection was part of Sahajananda’s founding vision, and as the school has grown since its inception in 2012, so has our capacity to reach out to our neighbors.

With the help of devoted teachers and Karma Yogis, our Community Development Department has created relationships with members of the local community that have expanded our understanding of the culture and allowed us to begin to share the non-dual teachings that we hold so dear.

When Hurricane Agatha hit in May 2022, our department mobilized to offer direct support to those most affected. This proved to be a beautiful opening to service that expanded our vision and redoubled our commitment to the community.

A New Partnership

In the immediate aftermath of the hurricane, our team visited six local communities, providing emergency supplies and other assistance to over 100 of the neediest families.

We focused our actions on the most difficult-to-reach villages in the Tonameca area. Of the communities we visited, one stood out as the neediest—Agua Dulce. Our initial efforts there included providing food, water, and materials to repair the roof of the chapel. Realizing that even when hurricane damage is repaired, this community would still be in dire straits, we asked if they would like to partner with us to improve ongoing conditions in their village.

Agua Dulce is one of the most isolated traditional communities, home to approximately 31 families who speak the indigenous Zapotec language in addition to Spanish. The majority are farmers, as they live on fertile land.

After gradually building a trusting relationship with the residents of Agua Dulce, we came together in a formal community gathering to confirm our partnership. Together, we agreed to focus on the following goals:

  • Support agricultural production through training on sustainable, healthful methods of farming.
  • Build a well and an irrigation system.
  • Produce fruits and vegetables for purchase by the Hridaya Center.
  • Develop business opportunities, especially for women (who are not as involved in farming activities), through training in manufacturing clay pottery.
  • Repair the roof of the chapel.
  • At the end of July, Hridaya donated $2,000 USD from donated funds to purchase shovels, machetes, sprinklers, seeds, and other supplies needed to upgrade production. The crops are thriving, and many are almost ready to harvest. When possible, Hridaya will purchase produce to use in our kitchen.
  • Fifteen women are embarking on a 2-month, 16-session training program with a successful local potter. Learning to make clay pottery will provide financial opportunities and is a beautiful opportunity for participants to explore new horizons outside the home setting.
  • We are looking for experts in sustainable and ecological agriculture to work with the community in a sensitive way, as the products they have been using are toxic to the environment, to the families exposed to them, and, ultimately, to consumers.
  • We have plans to build a well and irrigation system once the rainy season is over.
  • Hridaya purchased materials to repair the chapel’s roof, the community did the work, and it is again a cherished gathering space.
  • We long to support the village’s children and teenagers by creating more educational opportunities. Currently, the village has a primary school with one classroom where all the children receive classes together three times a week. In a recent workshop, we invited the children to feel their hearts and express their dreams for the future on paper. We plan to get to know them better and find ways to support their development.

We are truly grateful for the outpouring of donations for these efforts and are taking our time to allocate funds with care. As we are committed to continuing this work indefinitely, we welcome contributions. You may donate via credit card or bank transfer (Beneficiary: Hridaya Yoga AC; Bank Name: BBVA; Account Number: 012180001152110263; Swift Code: BCMRMXMMPYM; please put “Oaxaca” in the transaction description, so we know where to target your donation).

As the work of the Community Development Department progresses, there will likely be opportunities to get involved. Please email us if you have a special skill that you think may be helpful.

We’ll share updates on our partnership with Agua Dulce on Facebook and Instagram. We also invite you to sign up for our Community Development Department Newsletter.

The natural movement of the Heart is to help others, ultimately going beyond any division of “self” and “other.” Out of love, we do whatever we can, moving together through this mystery of life. Thank you for your support!
