That essence is the Self, the Spiritual Heart. Although you are not and can never be separate from the Heart, that truth is often hidden behind an identification with the ego and its stories. Thankfully, it’s possible to transcend this illusory condition. So, what is Hridaya Meditation? It’s a method rooted in Self-Inquiry that deconditions, transforms, and, ultimately, guides you back home to the Heart.
In the middle of the chest, a little to the right, lies the Heart Center, a portal to the Infinite. By resting our awareness there, we intimately feel the pure “I am,” which will guide us to the omnipresent Reality of the Heart.
Between every inhale and exhale, there is a pause—a transitional moment in which thoughts dissipate and the mind quiets. In these pauses lies an invitation to Stillness, a calling to taste transcendence and rest in the truth of who we really are.
Asking the wonderment-question “Who am I?” is a direct spiritual method that Ramana Maharshi called “the most sacred of sacred.” The practice of Self-Inquiry turns us inward, leading us beyond duality and conceptualized identifications to the very depths of our being.
A lovely Zen metaphor compares the technical aspects of practice to ineffable Awareness. These elements are like a finger pointing to the Moon. We should focus on what they reveal (the Moon, the Self), not the finger (our techniques). For instance, focusing on the Heart Center can enhance concentration and clarity while opening the door to the experience of Oneness. Hridaya Meditation uses these tools but ultimately transcends them, celebrating the freedom and joy of the Self.
