(Tanmātra): Tan means “subtle,” and matra means “elements.” The tanmatras are the subtle elements that support the experiences of the five senses (hearing, touch, vision, taste, and smell). The five tanmatras are the corresponding energies that make any sensorial experience possible—they are the ways in which the objective world is sensed. The action of these five subtle energies enables the sense organs to relate to gross forms of matter.
